Literacy

What is literacy — and why does it matter?

What is literacy?

Literacy is the ability to read, write, speak and listen in a way that allows us to communicate effectively and make sense of the world around us.

The importance of literacy

Literacy is a fundamental life skill. Without it, life would be very challenging. Literacy skills help you to develop and communicate — and they underpin most learning at school. Reading, writing, listening and speaking are integral to success and to day-to-day engagement with learning activities.

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."
— Dr. Seuss
